Last Saturday morning we held the first competitive race for this series at Strathfieldsaye Linear Park. It was a beautiful morning and we shared our start area with the people watching the soccer. As is usual with this area we walked a few hundred metres to the start, near the football ground and so had a taste of the two footy codes.

The set up took a bit longer for this, the first race, as we had to arrange the teams that will last for the rest of the series. The competitors worked some controls near the football arenas and then made their way back to circle the soccer ground and the school to the finish. As this was the first time for some, we arranged to have some of our elite juniors patrol the course to ensure that all went well.
We only had four teams but the competition was fast and furious. You will note from the times that all teams made it back without any penalties and the scores were very impressive given that this was the first Space Race for the competitors.

Results

Teams
Super Sixers 280 points
Hurry Ups 280
The Formula 1’s 260
The FFC’s 200

Individual
Charlotte Wigney (SS)	25.34
Sarah Morse-McNab (SS)	25.34
Brianna Rankin (HU’s)	29.32
Liam Morse-McNab (HU’s)	29.33
Joanna McLean (F1’s)	25.58
Daniel McLean (F1’s) 26.02
Mabel Kranner (FFC’s)	23.59
Isabel Byrne (FFC’s) 23.59

Next week.
Race 2 will be on Spring Gully Creek. This is a long reserve similar to Strath (not as curly!), but the start/finish will be in the same place, close to the assembly area at the back of the tennis courts. Travel out Carpenter Street and at the Cemetery turn left into Spring Gully Road. Continue for about 1 km and look for the tennis courts on the left.
Assembly from 9.30 am, map handout at 10.00 and mass start at 10.30.

It has been a good exercise and the wind up with its sausages, cakes and lollies and Mars Bars was fitting. Thanks to Karen (Katie and Corey’s Mum) for the yummy cakes and lollies. And, while on the thanks bit, thanks to Katie and Tia for taking Grace under their collective wing, to Corey for looking after Michael and to Jack Wigney for looking after Coby. I love the way you people take care of other people – I wish the caring bit was a little more visible in the elite ranks of orienteering.
Congratulations to all who took part, and particularly the winners; this was the first bush orienteering venture for Lachlan, Zac, Michael and Coby and I hope it was a good experience.

The third race in this series will be on the Lyell Forest map near Axe Creek, courses set by Daryl Fleay. There is only one more race after this and the points are very tight so come out and go for it! Only two more races to go.

I was impressed by the performance of the UFO’s and the Alien’s on Saturday — they had a bit of a glitch with their navigation on one of the last controls but successfully relocated and got back OK. This is part of good orienteering – to be able to find your place on the map after you make an error. Well done these two teams. I am very impressed when kids handle their mistakes as well as these people did. (There were some very nervous people back at the start, I might add!)

Space League Competition 4/8/2012.

The first race in the four race Space League series was runon the Brown’s Reef map last Saturday. Course 5 was chosen as the easiest course but even so the first two controls were in quite complex terrain and could have been difficultto find, but apparently no one had any real problems. Everyone got back safely. We have chosen teams and named them; where people run by themselves they are a team of one. In the next race we will bring in a handicap system as some of the people have much more experience than others, and are older and faster. This will make a big difference, but even as it was on Saturday there are only seven minutes between first and last – Charlotte Wigney went around with her Mum and she is younger and hasn’t done a lot of orienteering yet so she took a bit longer. She has been included as a team and is certainly in the competition. I think that as the handicap process starts to show there will be a lot less points separating the competitors.
Space League is in its early stages and will develop as did Space Racing. There was a great atmosphere on Saturday and I think everyone enjoyed themselves. Details of the next race are shown below. Try and be there – help your team and enjoy the bush.

We will brush up on your compass work again next week and look at following a bearing from point to point.
Thanks to all the J SQUAD members who turned up to help out, great to see you showing the others how it is done.
